Most of Manhattan's Freight Must Float to Terminals

From the collection of Steve Agostini

Pennsylvania Railroad "float bridges" such as these had a capacity of 22 cars.  The PRR's New York marine department numbered some 1,900 vessels in 1936.  Craft ranging from tugs and ferries to grain boats, refrigerator barges, and hoisting lighters. Take notice of the smokestacks on the tugs!!!
