Most all of the following photos highlight the amount of grinding that occurred during the last six days.  All welds, as we know, must be surface ground and reinspected.

Machinist 2nd class Keith Fee removing rusted threshold on fireman's side.  Keith is also a railroad employee working at a diesel terminal.  Keith's father Bob,  also works on the 5711 and is responsible for applying the plastic body over all the new steel and welds.

Fireman's door threshold.

Fireman's side-nose.

Repositioned and wire MU.

I could not get a photo of Keith at rest.

Where we all would like to be...

Someone has to do all the grinding and so here we see Machinist Al Hillman busy at work. Al spent over forty hours and countless grinding wheels on the many hundred of inches of weld.

HEP.

In the nose, rewiring the MU.

Engineman side threshold.  Rust has been cut out and a rust inhibitor applied.  A needle gun is used to hammer away at the surface rust.   Additional work prior to steel application will be performed.

With the nose almost complete, the work on the rust moves now towards the rear of the unit.

Machinist Levin and Fee applying new threshold.
